Introduction

You must have heard people say that a healthy heart is the key to happiness in life. This is not at all just another quote about being healthy, rather this is the actual mantra to a happy and healthy life. The fact that cardiovascular diseases are one of the most significant public health challenges that today's youth is facing is really concerning.

Once considered the domain of the elderly, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are increasingly becoming a significant health concern for the younger generation. As adolescent makes up 25% population, they must be healthy and fine. The prevalence of heart-related conditions among the youth is on the rise, posing serious implications for public health.

For the past 15 years, coronary heart disease and stroke have remained the leading cause of mortality and morbidity, worldwide. Currently, 1.1 billion people suffer from hypertension, and 17.9 million individuals annually succumb to cardiovascular diseases (CVD), accounting for 31% of global deaths. Experts predict a concerning escalation, with predictions indicating that over 23 million people will die from CVD in 2030 if current trends persist. In this article we will discuss more about this serious health concern.

Earlier believed to be a health concern of just the elderly, the trend over time has changed, and cardiovascular diseases have started affecting the youth as well. Historically, cardiovascular diseases were associated with aging, lifestyle choices, and genetic predispositions. However, recent years have witnessed a disturbing shift, with a noticeable increase in CVD diagnoses among the youth. This shift can be attributed to the following factors :

  1. Sedentary Lifestyles: A lack of physical activity and increased screen time in children and young adults these days is causing a rise in obesity and poor cardiovascular health among young people.

  2. Genetics: Your genes play a very big role in how healthy you are. In some people, a family history of heart disease or genetic predispositions to heart related conditions may increase the risk of CVD among young individuals.

  3. Unhealthy Diets: With the rising craze for processed foods and refined sugars, our youth is exposed to the toxins that affect not just their brains but also their hearts. Poor dietary choices, high consumption of processed foods, and excessive sugar intake contribute to the development of various heart related conditions like hypertension and diabetes, which are risk factors for CVD.

  4. Smoking and Substance Abuse: Early exposure to tobacco and other intoxicants is also a big concern. Tobacco and substance use can damage the cardiovascular system, increasing the risk of heart disease among the youth.

  5. Stress: You might wonder what stress would a child or young adult have. They don't even have jobs or mouths to feed. Sadly, in this competitive world, no one is safe and even the youth are facing these problems. This stress from early life is adversely affecting their heart health.

  6. Infections: Yes, there are many infections that can affect the children and end up causing cardiovascular diseases in childhood or adulthood .

Types of Cardiovascular Diseases Affecting Youth

Now that you know the major factors causing cardiovascular diseases in youth, it'll be easier to understand the various types of cardiovascular diseases affecting the youth. Some may be present at birth, while others may develop due to infections and other factors.

Types of Cardiovascular Diseases Affecting Youth

Many different types of heart problems can affect the youth. They can include:

  • Congenital Heart Defects

  • Infections that affect the Heart

  • Heart disease acquired due to lifestyle choices

Congenital Heart Defects

Heart illness that is inherited is known as congenital heart disease (CHD). It happens as a result of congenital cardiac problems. These usually occur due to some birth defects or due to genetic predispositions. Your health may be impacted in the long run by congenital cardiac abnormalities. Typically, drugs, surgery, catheterizations, and, in extreme situations, heart transplants are used to treat them.

Children and teens who suffer from CHD may be affected by:

  1. abnormalities of the heart valves, such as aortic valve constriction that limits blood flow

  2. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome, is characterized by underdevelopment of the left side of the heart

  3. Conditions affecting the heart's holes, usually in the walls between its chambers and the main blood arteries that exit it, such as :

  • ventricular septal defects

  • atrial septal defects

  • patent ductus arteriosus

  • tetralogy of Fallot, which is a combination of four defect

Infections that affect the Heart

Infections that affect the heart, often referred to as cardiovascular infections, can have serious consequences and may lead to various heart-related complications. These infections can be caused by viruses, bacteria, protozoans and funguses.

Infections that affect the Heart

Some infectious conditions that can affect your heart are:

  • Endocarditis

  • Myocarditis

  • Pericarditis

  • Rheumatic Heart Disease

  • Kawasaki disease

  • Chagas disease

Heart disease acquired due to lifestyle choices

One major heart condition that is caused due to poor lifestyle choices is atherosclerosis. When plaques containing fat and cholesterol accumulate inside arteries, it is known as atherosclerosis.

The accumulation raises the risk of blood clots and heart attacks by stiffening and narrowing the arteries. Atherosclerosis usually takes many years to develop. Although symptoms in children or teenagers are uncommon, there is evidence to suggest that the disease may start in early childhood.

Prevention and Intervention in Cardiovascular Diseases

Prevention is a very crucial thing when it comes to cardiovascular diseases. Addressing the rising tide of cardiovascular diseases among the youth requires a multifaceted approach:

Prevention and Intervention in Cardiovascular Diseases
  1. Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: Be it in children or in adults, by making minor lifestyle changes, we can prevent cardiovascular conditions from developing and even worsening. Encouraging healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep are essential components of preventing CVDs.

  2. Education and Awareness: Raising awareness about the risks of substance abuse, and the importance of regular health check-ups can empower young individuals to take control of their cardiovascular health.

  3. Mental Health Support: Recognizing the impact of stress on heart health is very important. Mental health support services, including counseling and stress management programs.

  4. Early Detection and Intervention: Timely screening for risk factors and early detection of cardiovascular issues are crucial in preventing and curing heart conditions.

Heart Transplant

Heart transplantation is a sophisticated surgical technique in which a healthy donor heart is used to replace a damaged or failing heart of a diseased individual. Usually, people with end-stage heart failure, severe coronary artery disease, or congenital heart defects who are not responsive to other medical treatments are the ones who are eligible for this life-saving procedure.

In this complicated surgery, there is a donor heart. The donor heart belongs to an individual who has already been declared brain dead and after necessary consent, carefully it is checked if the donor heart matches the recipient. After this, trained surgeons then perform the transplant, joining the recipient's circulatory system to the new heart's blood vessels.

Improving the quality of life of a person suffering with advanced heart disease is the main goal of a heart transplant. A heart transplant becomes an appealing choice when medical interventions such as medication, lifestyle modifications, and other surgical procedures are no longer effective. The goal of the procedure is to relieve heart failure symptoms, return the body to normal function, and allow the recipients to resume activities that their cardiac condition had previously prevented them from doing.

Like any major surgery, heart transplant surgery also carries inherent risks and potential side effects. One of the most significant challenges is the risk of rejection, where the recipient's immune system perceives the new heart as foreign and attempts to attack it. There are many other side effects as well. Despite all these side effects, heart transplant is still a life changing surgery which makes a crucial impact on the lives of many people.

Take-Home Points

The increasing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases among the youth is a cause for concern and it demands our urgent attention. It is imperative to implement preventive measures, educate young individuals about the importance of cardiovascular health, and provide adequate support for those facing these challenges.

On the other hand, heart transplantation is a remarkable achievement in modern medicine, providing a lifeline for individuals facing severe heart conditions. As medical advancements continue, addressing challenges such as organ shortages and improving post-transplant care remains paramount.
